CBS 60 Minutes

On Feb. 24, 2008, CBS 60 Minutes broadcast a segment, “Did Ex-Alabama Governor Get A Raw Deal?” Correspondent Scott Pelley interviewed experts who suggested that Alabama’s former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman was prosecuted on corruption charges to keep him from running for re-election in 2006 after he was narrowly defeated for re-election in 2002. Witnesses included a Republican former Arizona state attorney general then co-chairing the Republican Presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain and also helping to lead an unprecedented petition effort against the conviction by former attorneys general nationwide. Another witness was Dana Jill Simpson, an Alabama attorney who testified that she participated as a Republican campaign worker on a conference call in 2002 mapping out a conspiracy to have Siegelman indicted to remove him from politics. Additionally, the CBS program revealed that the main witness against Siegelman was repeatedly coached by prosecutors.
