DOJ Misconduct Forum
Breakthrough National Conference on Political Prosecutions
On June 26, 2009, leaders of what would become the Justice Integrity Project organized a unique conference that featured 13 victims of political prosecutions and independent experts at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The conference was entitled, “Justice Department Prosecutorial Misconduct: How Bad & What’s Next?” C-SPAN broadcast the conference nationwide for its more than three-hour duration, providing the country with compelling video of the victims' stories.
The concept was to convene authors of investigative articles reporting on suspiciously political prosecutions, subjcts ofthe articles, their federal accusers and independent experts, and invite the mainstream media that has difficulty with such topics that do not readily fit within traditional deadlines and formats. The Justice Department failed to send a representative and traditional media provided scant coverage. But others provided authoritative descriptions of serious problems. Among the speakers was U.W. Clemon, who had retired earlier in the year after a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades as a federal judge in Alabama.
The conference was organized by Justice Integrity Project Executive Director Andrew Kreig, working in cooperation with Sarah McLendon Group President John Edward Hurley along with such co-sponsors as Project Save Justice, the Walker Group and Velvet Revolution. The latter created a video of the conference that is available here: Selective Prosecutions.
